Uncovering the Rich Culture and History of La Paz, Agusan del Sur

La Paz is a small town in the province of Agusan del Sur in the Philippines. It is a town with a rich pre-colonial history and culture. The city is known for its colorful festivals, cultural practices, and historic sites that showcase the city's heritage. 

One of La Paz's most famous landmarks is an ancient barangay boat, thought to have been used by the ancient Butuanongs, an indigenous group of the region. Population and Economy

San Luis, Agusan del Sur, has an agricultural economy with mainly rice, corn, and coconut as its main crops. The city also has potential in forestry and mining. The town has small shops and businesses that provide additional employment opportunities for locals.  

As of 2020, the population of San Luis, Agusan del Sur is estimated to be around 26,000  based on  Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) data. The city's population is relatively young, with an average age of 21. The majority of residents are  Visayan and Lumad, with Cebuano and Manobo being the predominant languages.

Lake Motong

Lake Motong is a natural freshwater lake in  La Paz City, Agusan del Sur, Philippines. Covering an area of ​​about 25 hectares, the lake is surrounded by lush vegetation and offers tranquil and beautiful scenery. A popular destination for locals and tourists alike, it offers a variety of activities such as fishing, boating, and swimming.  

The lake is home to a variety of fish species including tilapia, catfish, and carp. Visitors can rent a boat or bring their own to explore the lake and try their hand at fishing. There are also cottages and picnic areas for those looking to spend a relaxing day with family and friends. 

In addition to recreational activities, Lake Motong also plays an important role in irrigating the surrounding rice fields. It is an essential water source for agriculture and supports the lives of local farmers.  

Getting to Lake Motongu in La Paz, Agusan del Sur is easy. From Butuan City, take a bus or van to San Francisco, Agusan del Sur. From there, take a jeepney or habal habal (motorcycle taxi) to La Paz. Lake Motong is close to the city center and  easily accessible on foot or by tricycle.


Motong Falls

Motong Falls is a popular natural attraction in  San Luis City, Agusan del Sur, Philippines. The waterfall is located at Sitio Motong, Barangay Station. Easy to reach on foot or by habal-habal (motorcycle taxi). 

The waterfall has layers of cascading water, each with its own natural pool for visitors to swim and cool off. The surrounding area is covered with lush vegetation, adding to the natural beauty of the waterfall. Visitors can also have a picnic or relax in the shade of the nearby trees. 

Motong Waterfall is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, especially during the hot summer months. The waterfall is easily accessible and provides a refreshing break from the heat. It is recommended to visit early in the morning to avoid crowds.  

To get to Motong Falls, take a bus or van from Butuan City to San Luis. From the city, take a Habal Habal (Motorbike Taxi) and alight at Sitio Motong at Barangay Railway Station. Ann. The waterfall is a short walk from the drop-off point. Hiring a guide or asking for directions is also recommended to ensure a safe and hassle-free trip.

Another of La Paz's major landmarks is the Church of San Vicente Ferrer, a centuries-old structure that represents the city's strong religious traditions. The church is known for its unique architectural design and stunning interior. It is also a popular pilgrimage site, especially during the town's public holiday celebrated on April 5th each year. 

Besides attractions, La Paz is also known for its lively festivals. One of the city's most popular festivals is the Kamran Festival,  celebrated on January 18th each year. The festival showcases the culture of the city's indigenous peoples through a variety of activities such as tribal dance competitions, folk games, and cultural exhibitions. Another festival celebrated in La Paz is the Caliguan Festival,  a harvest festival that celebrates the city's bountiful harvest.  


Migtingcalong Falls

Located in Barangay Binicalan, this waterfall is a popular destination for those looking to relax and enjoy the beauty of nature.


Nakatalas Falls

Another waterfall located in Barangay Binicalan, Nakatalas Falls is a hidden gem that offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape.


The Kaligaon Festival

The Kaligaon Festival is a colorful festival held annually in San Luis, Agusan del Sur. The festival honors the city's patron saint, St. Louis, and showcases the unique culture and traditions of the region's Tagakaulo people. 

The festival usually lasts two days in  August and is filled with various activities and events. One of the festival's main highlights is the street dance contest, in which participants dress in colorful costumes and dance to the beat of indigenous music. Another highlight is the agricultural fair, where local farmers and entrepreneurs showcase their products and services. 

Besides these major events, there are also sports competitions, beauty contests, and cultural performances. Festivals are a great way to experience San Luis' rich cultural heritage and immerse yourself in the local way of life. 

If you plan to attend the Kaligaon Festival, it is recommended that you book your accommodation in advance. The festival attracts many tourists from nearby cities.

There are different ways to get to San Luis, Agusan del Sur depending on your location.

1. From Davao City:

  • Take a bus or van from Ecoland Bus Terminal to San Francisco, Agusan del Sur.
  • From San Francisco, take a jeepney or van to San Luis.


2. From Butuan City:

  • Take a bus or van from Butuan Bus Terminal to San Francisco, Agusan del Sur.
  • From San Francisco, take a jeepney or van to San Luis.


3. From Manila:

  • Take a flight to Butuan City. From there, follow the directions above.
  • Alternatively, take a long-distance bus from Manila to Davao City and follow the directions above.


4. From Cebu:

  • Take a flight to Butuan City. From there, follow the directions above.
  • Alternatively, take a ferry from Cebu to Surigao City, then take a bus or van to Butuan City and follow the directions above.


Once you arrive in San Luis, you can take a tricycle or motorcycle to get to your specific destination within the municipality.
