HISTORY: 

Originally part of the municipality of Prosperidad, San Francisco became a separate municipality on June 21, 1969, through the operation of Republic Act No. 5834. The parish is named after Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of the town. The first appointed mayor of San Francisco was the late  Valentin O. Labai, who served from 1969 until 1971. 


ECONOMY: 

 San Francisco's economy is primarily based on agriculture, with rice, corn, coconuts, and bananas being the main crops grown. The community is also known for animal husbandry, especially pigs and poultry. In recent years, the city has explored the potential of ecotourism as a source of economic growth, with several resorts and eco parks opening in the area. 

San Francisco's local government is also investing in infrastructure development to improve the city's connectivity to the rest of the state. The municipality lies along the Agusan-Davao National Highway, which connects it with other major cities in the region. 

 

Population: 

According to the 2020 Census, San Francisco's population is 67,427, making it the state's second most populous municipality after Prosperidad. The population is mainly rural, with agriculture and arable farming being the main source of income. The city is home to several indigenous peoples, including the Manobo and Higaonon. 

In recent years, San Francisco has experienced urbanization, with more and more people moving downtown for work opportunities and comfort. Local governments strive to ensure that urban growth is sustainable and that the needs of rural and urban residents are met.

Besides Tinuy-an Falls, San Francisco is also a gateway to other beautiful waterfalls such as Limbagan Falls and Bega Falls. 



HOW TO GET THERE

San Francisco, Agusan del Sur is located in the northeastern part of the island of Mindanao in the Philippines. Here's how to get to San Francisco. 
 
  • By Air: The closest airport to San Francisco is  Bancasi Airport in Butuan City, Agusan del Norte. From the airport, you can take a bus or van to San Francisco. It takes about 2 hours to get there. 
  • Land: San Francisco is accessible by land from the rest of Mindanao. Buses and vans serve routes from Davao City, Cagayan de Oro City, and Surigao City to San Francisco. Journey times range from 4 to 8 hours, depending on the departure point. 
  • By Sea: There are no direct ferries or boats to San Francisco. However, if you are coming from Manila, you can take a ferry to Surigao City or Nasipit in Agusan del Norte and take a bus or van to San Francisco. 
  • Once in San Francisco, you can hop on a tricycle or habal-habal (motorcycle) and tour the city and its barangays. Some attractions in San Francisco may require hiking or trekking. Please wear comfortable clothes and shoes.
