A Relaxing Getaway to the Serene Town of Jabonga, Agusan del Norte

The small quiet town in the heart of Agusan del Norte is a place many have yet to discover. A Grade 5 community in the state, Jabonga offers visitors a glimpse into life in a quintessential Filipino town, complete with friendly locals, scenic landscapes, and delicious food.  

 Getting to Jabonga is relatively easy. It takes about 1 hour from Butuan City by private car or public transportation. You can also get there in about two hours from Surigao City. One of Jabonga's main attractions is Lake Mainit, the fourth-largest lake in the Philippines and the deepest lake in the country. The lake straddles the two provinces of Agusan del Norte and Surigao del Norte and is surrounded by lush mountains with beautiful views. Visitors can go boating or fishing on the lake and enjoy the scenic beauty. 

 Another must-see in Jabonga is the Agusan Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary, a protected area of ​​over 14,000 hectares. The reserve is home to a wide variety of wildlife including several species of birds, fish, and mammals. Visitors can take boat tours of the marsh and see the animals in their natural habitat. 

  For hikers, Mount Hiron Hiron is a popular rock climbing spot. At over 2,000 meters high, this mountain is a challenging hike but offers spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. 

 Jabonga is also known for its abundant marine resources, and visitors can indulge in fresh seafood such as crabs, shrimps, and fish. Local dishes of the city include shredded chicken or beef and rice wrapped in banana leaves called 'pastil' and a fried chicken dish called 'lechon manok'. In addition to natural beauty, Jabonga is also rich in history and culture. Saint Isidore Parish Church, the oldest church in the city, was built in the 17th century and still stands. The church attests to the city's rich heritage and recalls the Spanish colonial days.

HOW TO GET THERE

Here are some ways to get into Jabogna;

By Air: The nearest airport to Jabonga is the Bancasi Airport in Butuan City, which is approximately 105 kilometers away. From the airport, you can take a taxi or a van to Jabonga.


By Land: You can take a bus or a van from Butuan City to Jabonga. There are several bus companies and van operators that serve this route. The travel time is approximately 2-3 hours depending on the traffic.


By Private Vehicle: If you have your own vehicle, you can drive to Jabonga from Butuan City. The road is generally in good condition, and the trip should take around 2-3 hours.


By Motorcycle: You can also take a motorcycle taxi or "habal-habal" from Butuan City to Jabonga. This is a popular mode of transportation in the Philippines, but be sure to negotiate the fare before getting on.
