Unwinding in Cagwait: A Relaxing Getaway in the Heart of Mindanao

Cagwait is a small town on the east coast of  Surigao del Sur province in the Caraga region of the Philippines. The city has a rich pre-colonial history, inhabited by the Mandayan indigenous people. The name 'Kagwait' is believed to be derived from the Mandayan word 'Kagai' which means 'beautiful' or 'abundant'.

During  Spanish colonial times, Cagwait became part of the province of Caraga, establishing the city as a center of trade and commerce. Located on the coast, the city has become an important port for shipping agricultural products such as rice, coconuts, and abaca to the rest of the Philippines and Southeast Asia.

During World War II, Kagwait was occupied by the Japanese and heavily bombed by American forces trying to retake the city. Many residents were killed or forced to evacuate, and the city suffered great damage.

In 1960, Cagwait officially declared a municipality and became part of the newly formed Surigao del Sur province. Today, the city is known for its beautiful beaches, lush forests, and vibrant culture. Its economy is primarily supported by agriculture, fishing, and tourism.
