Tagana-an, Surigao del Norte: A Coastal Haven for Nature Lovers

Located on the east coast of Surigao del Norte, Tagana Ann is a small community characterized by stunning natural beauty and a laid-back coastal lifestyle. This off-the-beaten-path destination is perfect for travelers who want to escape the crowds and immerse themselves in natural beauty. 

Beaches and Islands 

One of the charms of Tagana-an is the beautiful sea and islands. The community has several pristine beaches that offer crystal clear waters, powdery white sand, and a serene atmosphere, including Alinka Kajo Beach and Harian Island Beach. 

These beaches are perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and relaxing. 

  • Tinago Lagoon

It is known for its clear water, lush greenery, and tranquil surroundings. The lagoon is a popular spot for swimming, snorkeling, and kayaking, and visitors can also enjoy stunning views of the surrounding area. Accessible by boat and not far from Taganan city center.   • Labok Labok Beach

A hidden gem offering crystal clear waters, powdery white sand, and beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. The beach is ideal for swimming, sunbathing, and water sports such as snorkeling and kayaking. Visitors can also take leisurely strolls along the beach, relax under the shade of coconut trees, and soak up the peaceful atmosphere.

  • Lapsay Lagoon

A hidden gem surrounded by lush greenery and towering trees,  it is known for its crystal-clear water that reflects the vivid hues of the surrounding foliage. The lagoon is a popular spot for swimming, diving, and snorkeling, and visitors can also enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and stunning scenery. 
 
 Lapsay Lagoon is accessible by boat or by foot through the nearby forest. It is the perfect place for those who want to escape the hustle and bustle and enjoy the peace and quiet of nature.



  • Magkuno Lagoon

A hidden gem and off-the-beaten-path destination surrounded by lush greenery and towering trees. Magkuno Lagoon is known for its crystal-clear waters and is perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Visitors can also kayak or paddle in the lagoon's calm waters or relax on the white sandy beach. 

The lagoon area is teeming with wildlife, and visitors can see a wide variety of birds and reptiles. It is also home to the rare and endangered magkuno tree,  one of the largest and oldest trees in the Philippines. Reaching Magkuno Lagoon requires a boat trip or a hike through the nearby forest. Waterfall and Cave 

Besides the beach, Tagana-an has several natural attractions worth visiting. One is  Tagana-an Falls, a stunning waterfall surrounded by lush vegetation. The waterfall is relatively easy and can be reached with a short hike suitable for all ages.  Another natural wonder worth exploring is Tagana Cave, a unique geological formation famous for its limestone walls and eerie atmosphere. The cave contains various stalactites and stalagmites and is believed to have formed thousands of years ago. 


Pongkay Hills

The hill is known for its beautiful green slopes and breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Visitors can hike the hills and enjoy the fresh mountain air and breathtaking views. Along the way, you may also encounter different species of wildlife such as birds and butterflies. At the top of the hill, visitors can relax and take in stunning views of Taganan Bay and nearby islands.  

The best time to visit Ponkai Hills is in the early morning or late afternoon when the weather is cooler and the light is perfect for photography. We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and bringing water and snacks for the hike.

Pongkai Hills is a must-visit for nature lovers, hikers, and those who want to experience the beauty of Taganan's natural landscape.

 

Festivals and events 

Tagana-an is known for its vibrant festivals and events showcasing the community's rich culture and traditions. One of his most popular events is the Caliguan Festival,  held each May, in honor of the city's patron saint, Saint Isidore the Peasant. The festival features colorful street dancing, live music, and a variety of local cuisine. 

Another notable event is the Tagana Bay Festival held each September to promote the city's coastal resources and ecotourism initiatives. The festival features a variety of activities including beach cleanups, fishing competitions, and culture nights. 

 

Getting There 

Tagana-an is about 89 km from Surigao City, about 3 hours by car. Buses and minibuses run the route between Surigao City and Taganaan with fares ranging from PHP 100 to PHP 200. 

If you travel from Manila or other parts of the Philippines, you can fly to Surigao City and take a van or bus to Taganaan. final thoughts
