Off the Beaten Path: Unique and Unusual Things to Do in Bayabas Town, Surigao Del Sur

Bayabas is a small town located in the province of Surigao del Sur, Philippines. It was originally a sitio (small settlement) in the nearby large town of Liang. In 1954, Bayavas became an independent municipality under Decree No. 82 signed by then-President Ramon Magsaysay. 

It is located in the eastern part of Surigao del Sur, bordering the Pacific Ocean to the east, the city of Lianga to the west, the city of San Agustin to the north, and the city of Marihatag to the south. Bayavas has an area of ​​about 65.87 km² and a population of about 8,000  (as of 2020). 

Bayabas is a predominantly agricultural town and the residents' main source of income is farming and fishing. The city's fertile soil and favorable climate are suitable for growing crops such as coconuts, bananas, maize, and rice. 

Despite its small size, Bayabas has several natural attractions such as waterfalls, beaches, and caves. One of the city's most popular tourist attractions is the Maragondon Caves, which contain amazing stalactite and stalagmite formations. Other notable attractions include Kambongo Falls, Tagibo Falls, and Logan Beach. Overall, Bayabas is a charming and laid-back community that offers visitors a glimpse into rural Filipino life.

Bayabas town may be a small municipality, but it has several natural attractions for visitors to explore.

  •  Maragondon Cave: This cave is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Bayabas, known for its beautiful stalactite and stalagmite formations. Visitors can explore the cave's chambers and see the underground river flowing through it.  
  • Kambongaw Falls: This waterfall is located in a remote area and requires a short hike through the forest to reach it. Guests can cool off in the cool water and enjoy the natural scenery.  Taguibo Falls – Another waterfall located in Bayabas worth a visit is Taguibo Falls. It has a series of waterfalls that pour into a natural pool.  
  • Lawigan Beach: This beach is perfect for swimming and sunbathing with its fine white sand and crystal clear waters. Guests can also enjoy a picnic or barbecue on the beach.  
  • San Salvador Island: This island is located off the coast of Bayabas and can be reached by boat. It offers visitors the opportunity to explore beautiful coral reefs and see various forms of marine life.  
  • Bayabas River: Visitors can go for a river cruise or kayak along the Bayabas River that flows through the city. It's a great way to see the sights and learn about the city's history and culture.  
  • Bayabas Town Plaza: This is a great place to relax and unwind, with shady trees, benches, and a small fountain. This is a popular place for locals and visitors to relax and socialize. All in all, Bayabas offers visitors the chance to experience the natural beauty and charm of the Philippine countryside.
