Exploring the Untouched Beauty of Dinagat Island, CARAGA

Dinagat Island is a province in northeastern Mindanao. It consists of several islands, the largest and most important of which is Dinagat Island. The province has a population of around 127,000 and is known for its pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and lush forests. Its economy is mainly based on agriculture, fishing, and mining, with nickel being the province's most important mineral resource. The province is also rich in cultural heritage with several historical sites and monuments including the Church of San Jose which dates back to Spanish colonial times.

One of the most popular spots on the island is the Blue Lagoon of Libjo, also known as the Enchanted River. Visitors can swim and snorkel in the clear waters or rent a kayak to explore the source of the river.  



Another must-see attraction is  Pangabangan Island, which has a long sandy beach and crystal-clear waters. The island is perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and sunbathing. It also offers breathtaking views of sunrises and sunsets.   For those who enjoy hiking, Redondo Mountain Trekking and Camping Site is an excellent choice. 

This mountain offers a challenging but rewarding hike to the top where you can enjoy panoramic views of the island landscape. The campsite at the foot of the mountain is also an ideal place to relax and enjoy the tranquility of the surroundings. 

Visitors can also learn about the island's historical and cultural heritage at the San Jose Church, which dates back to  Spanish colonial times. The architecture of the church is a mixture of Spanish and Filipino styles and contains several religious artifacts.

HOW TO GET THERE

Here are some ways to reach Dinagat Island:

By Air: 
  • The nearest airport to Dinagat Island is Surigao Airport. From Manila, you can fly to Surigao City with Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, or AirAsia. 
  • From the airport, you can take a tricycle or taxi to Surigao Port, about 20 minutes away.

By Ferry: 
  • Several ferry companies connect the Surigao Municipal Port with San Jose, the capital of Dinagat Island. 
  • The journey time is about 2-3 hours.
  • Some of the ferry companies are Dinagat Islands Shipping Lines, Evaristo & Sons Sea Transport Corporation, and Fortune Angel Shipping Lines.
By Land and Sea: 
  • You can also take a bus from Butuan City or Surigao City to San Jose City on Dinagat Island. 
  • The journey time is about 4-5 hours. 
  • Upon arrival in San Jose, travel to your final destination by tricycle or motorbike.
  • It is advisable to check transport times in advance as they may vary depending on the weather and other factors.
