An eco-tourism adventure in San Agustin, Surigao del Sur: Protecting the environment while having fun


San Agustin is a small town located in the northeastern part of Mindanao, Philippines. San Agustin is bounded by the municipalities of Tagvina to the north, Tandag to the east, Bayabas to the south, and Ringigig to the west. San Agustin's economy is primarily agricultural, with rice and corn being the main crops. Other crops are coconuts, abaca, fruits, and vegetables. Fishing and ranching are also important livelihoods. 

According to the 2020 Census, San Agustin's population is 24,939, home to 4,716 households. The majority of the population is Roman Catholic, with minorities of other Christian denominations and Muslims. 

San Agustin has several natural attractions such as  Tagbuyawan Falls, Togonan Falls, and  Mabag Island Beach. The community hosts several festivals and celebrations throughout the year, including Araw ng San Agustin, which takes place on August 28th each year.


The Britania Group of Island

The Britannia Islands are an archipelago off the coast of San Agustin, Surigao del Sur, Philippines. It consists of her three main islands, Hickdop, Taganak, and Boslon, as well as several smaller islands.

 Another local legend tells of a beautiful princess who was kidnapped by an evil sorceress and taken to a cave. It is said that the princess was locked in a cave and guarded by a sorcerer's minions. One day a brave warrior came and defeated the sorceress, freed the princess, and saved the day. 

The caves are also believed to be home to supernatural beings such as duende (dwarfs) and encantos (ghosts). Locals believe these creatures guard the cave and surrounding forest, and should be respected and pacified to avoid offending them.  

Despite the many legends and stories surrounding  Hinayagan Cave, it remains an important cultural and natural landmark in San Agustin.
