Cantilan is a municipality positioned on the east coast of Mindanao, overlooking the Philippine Sea. The city was originally inhabited by indigenous people known as the Mamanwa, who were able hunter-gatherers. The area was later settled by Christianized immigrants from nearby areas, particularly Bohol and Leyte, who established small fishing villages. During the Spanish colonial period, CantilƔn was part of the Tandag district, which he founded in 1861. In 1907, Cantilan became a municipality with its first elected mayor, Don Aniseto Sarmiento. During World War II, Cantilan was occupied by Japanese forces, and the town was garrisoned. After the war, the city was rebuilt and made great progress, especially in the fishing industry.
