Jasaan, Misamis Oriental | Things to DO

Jasaan is a second-class community in Misamis Oriental Province, Philippines. As of the 2020 census, it has a population of 57,055 inhabitants. It is located in lush vegetation, about 28 kilometers east of the capital, Cagayan de Oro. It borders the communities of Villanueva, Claveria, and Balingasag, while to the west is Macajalar Bay.

Brief History

In 1830, Jasaan`s mission moved in turn from Cagayan de Oro, where its authority and evangelization extended as far as the towns of Sumilao, Linabo, and Malitbog in the interior of Bukidnon province. The center of civilization of the new parish and its first church became "Daanglungsod", now it is Aplaya, Jasaan, where an old Kota (watchtower) still stands.

However, this Kota was moved several meters from its original location to accommodate the development of the national highway in the seventies.  Father Gregorio Parache became the pastor of Jasaan at this time. Later, the Jesuits built the Nuestra Senora de Immaculada Concepcion Church, which is today the Church of the Immaculate Conception of Jasaan.

The distinctive exterior of the church has undergone many changes. The church's single altar was moved back to facilitate closer contact with believers in the church building. The only sacred room was pushed aside. The church is listed as a National Cultural Property by the National Council for Culture and Arts (NCCA).

Jasaan is considered the municipality of the entire province of  Immaculate Conception Parish in 1840. The classical church bells of the Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception in Jasaan (except for the current four bells in the Church of San Agustin in Cagayan de Oro) have these inscriptions on the outer edge of the church. "1860 For the City of the Hills" [somewhat] indicates that the Spanish authorities diagnosed the hills as cities.

Using an American approach at the beginning of the 20th century,  in 1903 the central government downgraded Hassan's political profile from a municipality to a barrio (the Spanish subdivision of the municipality) and merged it.

The Philippine Commission of 1903, Law No. 960, mixed several municipalities in 1903 because the civil authorities had no control over these municipalities. They cannot be protected by the Philippine Police or scouts, nor can they be ruled by pro-American locals!”.

On August 18, 1948, thanks to the distinctive feature of Sac Order number 165, issued by President Elpidio Quirino, Jasaan regained the city's reputation.

On November 10, 1948, Jasaan was inaugurated as a municipality and a group of appointed municipal officials took office

The early 1970s saw the installation of power lines and a program of widening avenues. Ubos has some ruins of Spanish houses along its main street, but these were razed in the early 1980s.
