Gitagum, Misamis Oriental

Gitagum is a fifth-class church in Misamis Oriental Province, Philippines. There are eleven barangays, four of which are urban areas due to their strategic location along the national highway and along Iligan Bay. Light commercial and industrial establishments are located in these barangays. 

Built-up areas for Urban Purposes include only 2.5% of the total land area of ​​Gitagum used for residential purposes and close to the public market, commercial establishments, churches, schools, municipal gymnasiums, squares, and other government buildings of the municipality The Coastal Burnay and Pangayawan barangays are covered with mangroves which remain protected.

Gitagum is located on the island of Mindanao in Region X and is below the second district of Misamis Oriental.  broad limestone plain at an elevation of 0 to 100 meters extends from Iligan Bay towards the easier part and narrows to rise 100 to 300 meters above sea level forming low and high relief shale/sandstone. Gitagum has the shape of a native fan. The broad limestone plain ranging in elevation from 0 to 100 meters extends eastward from Iligan Bay, narrowing to 100 to 300 meters above sea level and forming low and high-relief shale/sandstone hills. Ultrabasic high-relief hills in the southwesternmost part of the parish serve as the handle of the fan. Based on the slope profile of the community, the slope in Barangay G. Pelaez gradually becomes very steep, with a total area of ​​664.43 hectares. 

On the other hand, most of the rural barangay is either steep or gradually flat. The 0-18% slope is flat land that is considered nearly level for approximately 2156.85 hectares of the parish.

Gitagum was then a dense forest, there were wild boars and wild chickens. Some people from Tagnipa (El Salvador), Alubijid, and other neighboring towns applied for the place as a farm and then settled there. 

The people who first settled the place were Leodegario Patenio, Rosales Fabricador, Luis Balacuit, Juan Buray, Juan Taroy, and Dámaso Paculba. The non-Christians (native people) moved to the mountain because they don't like to get close to the Christians, but there are still a few native people who are friendly to the settlers. Leodegario Patenio has the idea that Gitagum should be a neighborhood. The doctor used the TAGUM TAGUM leaves for treatment purposes and from that point on the place was called "GITAGUM". 

In 1907, the Municipality of Cagayan, Misamis, made Gitagum a district and became part of said Municipality. LeodegariusPatenio has been promoted to lieutenant in the neighborhood. The neighborhood lieutenant called a meeting of all the settlers. During their meeting, they argued about their bloc party. When Alubijid became a church, Gitagum was part of the church. 

In 1961, the residents of Gitagum founded a neighborhood meeting. The purpose of the meeting was to request a church. Garcia, President of the Republic of the Philippines,  issued  Executive Order No. 435 of June 15, 1961, declaring that Gitagum shall be a regular municipality. President Garcia appointed the municipal officers of Gitagum, namely: Mr.Santiago L.D.Custodio T, Damaging was appointed Parish Secretary.

The climate of Gitagum is classified as Type III. Under this classification, the seasons are not very pronounced, with a relatively dry climate from November to April and a humid climate for the rest of the year. Four types of climate are distinguished based on the distribution of precipitation. 

Based on the Corona climate classification (Geohazard Report of Collantes, M., Lucero E.and Asis, J.) the municipality of Gitagum falls into type III, which means that the seasons are not very pronounced, dry from November to April and wet during the rest of the year. Heavy rains usually occur in the months of January, February, September, and December. The rainiest months are  January, August, July, and September. On the other hand, the driest period is from March to February with monthly rainfall
