El Salvador, Misamis Oriental

El Salvador is a City located in  Misamis Oriental Province, Philippines, and has a population of 58,771. The city has an area of ​​106.15 square kilometers or 40.98 square miles, which is 3.39% of the total area of ​​Misamis Oriental. Based on these numbers, the population density is estimated at 554 people per square kilometer or 1,434 people per square mile. 

CITY HOOD

On June 27, 2007, after the ratification of Republic Law 9435, the municipality of El Salvador became a city in the province of Misamis Oriental. The Supreme Court, at the request of the League of Cities of the Philippines, ruled on November 18, 2008, that the city planning law of El Salvador and 15 other cities was unconstitutional. 

On December 22, 2009, El Salvador's urban planning law was amended and 15 other municipalities regained their city status after the court overturned its November 18, 2008 ruling. After six years of litigation, the League of Philippine Cities recognized the city status of El Salvador and 15 other cities in its board resolution.

The city of El Salvador is also known for the tallest Divine Mercy Shrine in the Philippines. 

El Salvador was formed from the districts of Sala, Sambulawan, Sinaloc, Lagtang, Talaba, Kalabaylabay, and Hinigdaan, formerly part of Cagayan de Misamis, Eastern Misamis, Hinigdaan was a ranch during the Spanish period. The areas include the parts of Kalabay Labay where the Django have 300 hectares of land and hundreds of cows...the area was famous for raising cattle towards the Tugasnon-Alubijid areas Lourdes where the first community was located is now Gitagum Misamis Oriental moved to Alubijid and Sikitun.

On December 22, 2009, El Salvador's Urban Planning Act and 15 other municipalities regained their status as cities after the court overturned its November 18, 2008 ruling. On August 23, 2010, the court upheld its November ruling reinstated in November 2008, making El Salvador and 15 cities regular municipalities. Finally, on February 15, 2011, 

El Salvador became a city again, including the 15 municipalities that declared that the conversion to a city met all legal requirements. After six years of litigation, the League of Philippine Cities recognized recognized the city status of El Salvador and 15 other cities in its Board Resolution.

Events and Celebration

Our Lady of the Snows Parish  was established on 1861 by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro located at El Salvador City, Province of Misamis Oriental. The Parish Fiesta is celebrated every 5th day of August.

Charter day: June 27

Charter is celebrateed every June 27th of every year is hereby declared. a special nonworking holiday in the City of El Salvador, Province of Misamis Oriental, in commemoration of its charter day anniversary, to be known as "Araw ng El Salvador".

INTERESTING PLACES TO VISIT IN EL SALVADOR

  • Divine Mercy Shrine 

The Shrine of Mercy stands tall on the Divine Mercy Hills overlooking Macajalar Bay and Camiguin Island. Located in the hills of Divine Mercy, PSB-Ulaliman, overlooking Macajalar Bay. The sanctuary has a 50-foot statue of the Christ of Divine Mercy, the tallest in Asia.

  • Burias Island

It is located just a few kilometers off the coast of Molugan. The city government turned this shore into a marine sanctuary and made part of it a sanctuary for migratory green sea turtles, coral, giant clams and various species of fish. The city government will build some facilities such as a boat dock for easy access to the shoal.

  • El Salvador Night CafĆ© and Market 

This placer is a hotspot of the youngsters every Friday night set up in Barangay Poblacion. Tagnipa-ons and visitors gather to  enjoy the BBQ, live  music, beer and also the great deals at the nearby night market.

  • Our Lady of Snows Parish Church, 

This newly built church is located withinside the city. According to the story, during  the war between the Japanese, a number of ships carrying Japanese soldiers sailed off the coast of El Salvador to invade the city during the Battle of Mindanao. As their ships approached, a mysterious mass of white clouds (like snow) covered their view as if obscuring the location (El Salvador), making it impossible for the Japanese army to land safely on the beach. 

So, they decide to change course and save the city from possible attacks and damage.It is said that the same mass of clouds appeared on the Strandweg in front of this church, giving them the idea for the name: Parochial Church of Our Lady of the Snows. 

  • Waterfalls
    • Abaga Falls  is one of the most visited waterfalls in El Salvador located in  barangay San Francisco de Asis.
    • Sikiop Falls is another waterfalls that can be explore in barangay San Francisco de Asis.
    • Tag-ilas Falls,  is located in barangay Hinigdaan, around 10 kilometers or more or less 30-minutes travel from the downtown.

  • Tuburan Spring

This used to be a popular public hot spring with residents of El Salvador, but recently the local El Salvador municipality began converting the spring into a resort and water adventure park. But management warned visitors to be carefulTuburan Spring is 500 meters off the National Road from Poblacion, El Salvador.

  • House of Pasalubong

If you wish to buy local product i nthis town, pasalubong center is the right location with bunch of product selections. It is located in Zone 2, Poblacion.

HOW TO GET THERE

The city of El Salvador  can be reached by plane via  Laguindingan Airport, then  less than 10 minutes by bus east. As everywhere, the federal highway meanders through it. Visitors and locals can tour the city simply by shouting a "Sikad". -sikad" or motorboat, "jeepneys" or motorbikes to remote barangays.
