Baganga, Davao Oriental

The Municipality of Baganga is a 1st-class municipality withinside the east coast part of  Davao Oriental province in the Philippines. It is the biggest municipality and town in land area and the province's 1st legislative district.  It has a populace of 58,714 inhabitants according to the 2020 census making it the third-biggest city in the provincial city of the province's 1st legislative district. 

The fact that the Mandaya tribes made a remarkable feat in hosting receptions for the starving Spaniards encouraged survivors to tell Spain how beautiful the city was. Initially, Baganga was under Spanish rule, part of the commander of Bislig along with Cateel, Caraga, and Hinatuan de Surigao under the command of Sergeant Major Juan Camacho de la Peña. In 1894, Baganga, along with other settlements, had its first Spanish priest Fr. Gilbert, a Jesuit.


Baganga derived its name from the fruit-like thorny bush plum abundant during the Spanish era. Others say that it changed into mentioned a massive mouth of a river that traversed the principal part of the city. Baganga has a tropical rainforest climate with heavy to very heavy rainfall year-round.

The major economy is based on agricultural production mainly the largest producers are coconut, banana, mango, abaca, and coffee.  Coastal villages mainly engage in fishing while the main town comprises some shops and marketing businesses buying copra and charcoal from coconut shells.

Baganga officially became a city under the Organic Law on October 29, 1903. 

Today, this lovely town is politically subdivided into 18 barangays.
