The Sinulog Festival

he Sinulog  Festival, one of the most prestigious festivals celebrated in Cebu every January and the grandest of all festivals in the Philippines attended by millions of people each year in commemoration of religious history and honor to Patron of Cebu City, Santo Niño; a statue of baby Jesus as a special presentation by the Portuguese-born Spanish explorer Ferdinand Magellan to Rajah Humabon of Cebu in late 1521.

This millennium history became an organized celebration when the first Sinulog Parade was held in 1980, then, later on, it was adopted as the grandest festival.

Sinulog means “like a water current moving” as the festivals celebrating with forward-backward dance steps and refers to the flowing movements of dancers that seem replicates to a water wave involved in ritual prayer dance in the honor of Patron Santo Niño. This ritual activity believes in its existence even before Magellan's arrival; by honoring their God before it became famous as a festival.

Every third Sunday of January, the festival is celebrated in Cebu that attracts millions of visitors and devotees not only for those deep devotees but also for those to celebrate their rich cultures and traditions. There are street parties before and after the day of the event while the colorful dancer's costumes coming from all over the country will be gathered in full day-processions. Don’t miss the Grand Parade by Sunday, which starts in Basilica Santo Niño where the glass casing Statue is located.

Book your flight in advance for the festival is assumed to more than two (2) million visitors in the year 2019 coming from different nations.  To avoid any hustle, make sure that hotel accommodations are set before the celebration, so you’ll not miss any of the activities.

It is also advised to not bring any unnecessary belongings during the grand parade since you will be surrounded by a huge crowd. Packed with a water bottle, the wallet must be in place, sun protector and wear your patience at all times; being together and surrounded with ⏃ huge number of people, it cannot be prevented then you’ll be pushed or trick but those are part of having fun.  There is no rule about what to wear, it is up to you which clothes are comfortable to wear during the festival.
