Island Visit in Tubay, Agusan Del Norte

Tubay is a coastal and a fifth class municipality living 25, 785 people with more than 5, 000 represents 6.65% of Agusan del Norte’s total population,  according to the 2020 census. The named Tubay is inspired by the legendary Datu Tabay who lived in this area during the Spanish occupation in Agusan which was declared as Pueblo in 1751 and officially became an independent municipality in 1947. Today, this small town is politically divided into 13 barangays, some of these can be reached by boats.

It was August when I went to this town; life is quiet and simple, away from the noisy city. The next day, we went to a barangay called Tinigbasan. According to the locals, it was an island that could only be reached by motorboat so we looked for one so we could rent.

On the voyage, I noticed huge ships parked in the harbor as well as on the shore. I found out that this town is rich in natural resources. Nickel mining, one of the mined resources to be traded abroad. I then wondered why it was necessary to take it abroad to extract and become a product.

Less than an hour after we reached the island of Tinigbasan. before landing on the beach this place can be seen as very beautiful; there seemed to be an abundance of marine resources and the people were hardworking on my first impression because of the massive boats parked on the shore like ants; very beautiful to behold.

After our purpose of visit,  I went around the island and I found out that the place is not really an island but just surrounded by high mountains and the fastest way to reach this village is by boat. According to those I met, there is a road but it is difficult, narrow, and muddy; tripping feet especially in transporting their products. May the government notices this in the future because the road is a basic need of the area; a way for rapid development.

The people of Tinagbasan are indeed very productive, but they need support for more effective development. The people are kind, easy to talk to, hard-working and most of all this place can be considered a real treasure of Tubay.

When I returned to town, we had to rent a boat again; there is a passenger boat but not traveled regularly;  that means you have to wait a long hour before boarding again. I enjoyed watching the kids on the coast swimming and having fun on the beach didn't seem to dispute the heat of the sun.

Truly reliving past memories; the time before gadgets and the internet were born. Even though this place is 30 minutes away from the town, cellular signal is not present here; so the sea and other traditional games serve as a hobby for the children.
